German defector who despised what the Nazi party had done to his homeland, Eric Koenig had been a member of the Hitler Youth and later joined the Luftwaffe only to be transferred from the air force and made an aide to a Nazi doctor.

Koenig defected and joined the Howlers after helping Fury escape from Berlin. Koenig was called to fill in for Dino Manelli after he was seriously injured and made an official Howler soon thereafter. It was also soon evident that his skills as an expert pilot served him well on the team and his German background allowed Koenig to play crucial roles during missions behind enemy lines. Koenig forged a firm friendship with the loyal team, always setting out to prove his worth to them, and especially to Nick Fury, who shared a special relationship with his sister, Ilsa.

After the war, Koenig become a US citizen and was recruited into the US Foreign Service. While stationed in Latveria in 1959, he reunited with Fury to put down some leftover Nazis.
Perhaps because of his work, Koenig was the only Howling Commando who did not fight in the Korean War. However, years later, Koenig did join his Howling Commando compatriots on a volunteer mission in Vietnam. Eventually Koenig left government work and joined the civil air service, becoming an airline pilot.

In 1971 Koenig followed his former commander into SHIELD. Although not a part of the long established inner circle of SHIELD as Dum Dum and Gabe Jones, Koenig nonetheless had earned Fury's unwavering trust and quickly put his flying skill to work as a Fury's personal pilot. Among his missions, Koenig flew an attack mission against the island base of Centurius where he aided Iron Man and Ulysses Bloodstone. Koenig also flew on a mission with the newly inaugurated Femme Force and Captain America. Later Koenig was once again reunited with his Howler teammates in a bid to rescue their former commanding officer, Gen. Sawyer from a LMD of Von Strucker.

As an agent of SHIELD, Koenig found himself replaced by an LMD, as one of the many agents who ran afoul of the Deltite Affair. Although he was not among those initially revived as brainwashed HYDRA agents, Koenig's real body must have been found eventually as he was seen attending Nick Fury's "funeral".

Following the Skrull invasion, Koenig remained in the replacement agency for SHIELD created by Norman Osborne, HAMMER, as a pilot. He served as a mole for the rouge Nick Fury and the mercenary group Howling Commandos, led by Dum Dum Dugan. He was instrumental in helping to steal several SHIELD helicarriers from HAMMER..

Eric fought alongside fellow Howlers Dugan and Jones in a pitched battle against the Gorgon and his contingent of HYDRA soldiers where he lost his life. Following the loss of one of the stolen helicarriers, Koenig was killed in combat moments before Gabe Jones.
