Marvel rewinds its history with modern-day retellings of its character origins, including the X-Men and Spiderman in this widely popular Marvel imprint. The Ultimate universe, technically Earth 1610, has maintained a small but strong selling group of titles including Ultimate Spiderman, Ultimate X-Men, and The Ultimate's, all of which have featured Nick Fury.

A veteran of conflicts ranging from World War II through the first Gulf War, Nick Fury joined SHIELD in its earliest stages when it was still a small black ops operation, counting among its members, Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye. Fury was the subject Project Rebirth which granted him enhanced strength and extended life. In time Fury rose to the rank of general became head of SHIELD international security in 2002, his former boss being General Thaddeus Ross. Fury crossed paths with Wolverine during the first Gulf War, wherein the mutant saved Fury's life.

Personally recruiting Dr. Bruce Banner and Hank Pym for his Ultimate's, Fury also managed to include Tony Stark and a recently unearthed Captain America. Those working for SHIELD include Betsy Ross as public relations director.

Fury was trapped on Earth-31916 where eventually he started again with a black-ops and another super-hero group. Fury found his way back to his universe, finding Carol Danvers, his former personal aide, in charge of SHIELD.
